Essential MTB Tools Every Rider Should Own

Whether you’re riding every weekend or just getting into mountain biking, having the right tools makes all the difference. Good tools keep your bike running smoothly, save you from long walks back to the car, and make home maintenance way easier. Here’s 5 essential MTB tools you should own.

Trailside Essentials

These are the things I always carry on the bike:

Multi-tool: I run the Crank Brothers M19 – it has pretty much every hex, Torx, and screwdriver you’ll ever need on the trail.

Pump: Each of my two MTBs has its own pump setup. One bike runs the Crankbrothers Click HV Pump (fast inflation for big MTB tires), and the other runs a Lezyne Pocket Drive Pro (tiny, super portable).

Spare tube + tire levers: Even if you ride tubeless, punctures happen.

Quick link + small zip ties: Small, cheap, and absolute lifesavers if your chain snaps or something rattles loose.

At-Home Tools

When I’m working on my bike in the garage, these are my go-to tools:

Floor pump with pressure gauge – far more accurate than a mini pump.

Chain checker – to replace your chain before it kills your drivetrain.

Torque wrench – keeps bolts tight without stripping them.

Cleaning kit – brushes and degreaser (skip the pressure washer).

Allen key set – a proper one makes life so much easier.

My Setup in Practice

I actually run two Cleanskin Duo lights (one on the bars, one on the helmet) for night riding. Between that, my Crank Brothers M19, my pump setups on each bike, and the usual spares, I’m covered for most trailside repairs.

At home, I keep things simple — no massive workshop, just the basics that cover 90% of repairs. If something bigger comes up, I’ll order the part and fit it, or let my local shop handle the heavy jobs.

Final Thoughts

Tools aren’t just about fixing problems — they’re about confidence. When you know you can handle the basics, you’ll ride harder, explore further, and worry less.
